The Bible must be understood through the three-fold salvation our Lord has provided. In Genesis 1:26–28 we read that the Godhead took counsel together. God chose to reveal Himself to His created man as triune. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” (Genesis 1:26a KJV). He created man a triune creation consisting of spirit, soul, and body. In Paul’s prayer for the Thessalonians he prayed this about man’s spirit, soul, and body:

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 NKJV

The writer of Hebrews made clear how the Word of God is the instrument used to divide soul from spirit as well as the joints and the morrow including the discernment of the heart. It is the Word of God which is the source of our understanding about how God intended each part of function in relation to each another.

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12 NKJV

In the life of Jesus, we see the three-fold nature as He died on Calvary. He said to God: “Into your hands I commit my spirit.” (Luke 23:46b NKJV). The Psalmist wrote: “For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.” (Psalm 16:10 NKJV). Sheol is the same as hell.
