Paul, in his letter to the Colossians reveals that the life of Christ in the believer was a “mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints.” (Colossians 1:26 NKJV). He calls this mystery “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” (Colossians 1:27b NKJV). Only in Christ can we stand against the devil and his kingdom of darkness. Our natural man has no ability to take on the devil’s kingdom with its principalities and demons.
The Holy Spirit
To begin with, we must be born of the Spirit of God. Jesus clarifies this need when He says to Nicodemus, a religious leader of Israel, “Most assuredly, I say unto you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of heaven.” (John 3:3–6 NKJV). There is a flesh birth through our parents, but there must be a spiritual birth as well in order to enter into the life of Christ as a new creation and overcome the evil one. Paul wrote about this new creation:
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
The new birth that is addressed in John 3 and the new creation spoken of in 2 Corinthians 5 is the process of being translated from one kingdom to another: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son. Colossians 1:13 KJV
As the Holy Spirit gives life to our human spirit, we are placed into an eternal state through Him dwelling in us. We become part of the new creation which the Spirit of God is creating in the midst of the chaos of sin throughout humanity. Spiritually, He has placed us into heavenly realms where Christ Jesus is seated and reigns:
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2:4–7 NKJV
The work which the Father has done for us in Christ has an eternal purpose which He wants manifested in the here and now as well as in the ages to come. This work was established and completed for us even though we were dead in sin. The new creation that we became took place when we were born again and raised up in Christ. God seated us in heavenly places together in Christ. Therefore, our authority in spiritual warfare is found in our placement in heavenly places in Christ. As a new creation (because of our heavenly position in Christ), we are empowered to live our earthly life in victory for the Father.
