Jesus disarmed principalities and powers when He descended into the lowest parts of hell. He preached this to those who had perished in the flood, establishing that their judgment was valid because of their unbelief of Noah’s preaching to repent.

By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

1 Peter 3:19–20 KJV

As He bore the judgment of our sins, He also removed the handwriting against us. In other words, the Law of God which condemned us because in our flesh we could not keep those written commandments. God’s Law is perfect, but our flesh is weak. It took the One who could keep and fulfill the Law of God.

Having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us.

Colossians 2:14 NKJV

Jesus Christ won the victory over the world, the flesh, and the devil. The victory belongs to our great God and King. The judgment of the world, the flesh, and the devil is not yet completed. Our Lord has determined that His people participate with Him in the judgment. So, the judgment is ongoing until the nations are discipled, and the Lord returns for His own to finish the final judgment of all who have rejected Him. Consider these Bible verses:

And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly.

Romans 16:20 KJV

Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

1 Peter 5:8 KJV

The devil still has power, but we can overcome him by the authority of Jesus Christ who reigns in us. Jesus has the victory as stated in Ephesians 1:17–23, but he expects His people to clean up the mess and deliver the nations from Satan’s control.
